Assurance Wireless announced today that they will start offering service in the state of Oregon. Oregon becomes the 34th state that Assurance Wireless has service in and quickly follows last month’s announcement of the beginning of service in Colorado.

The announcement of Assurance Wireless’ service is particularly exciting, because it is the first major Lifeline carrier to offer free phones in the state of Oregon. Previously, residents could only get discounted service under the state’s Lifeline plan. The company released a statement today citing that 23% of the state’s population is living below the national poverty line. Therefore, this announcement will come as a relief to thousands of people in Oregon, who are looking for a job, or are looking to save money in these challenging economic times. Residents of Oregon may be eligible if they participate in one of several governmental assistance plans.

This is the third major announcement to come out of Assurance Wireless in as many months. The company recently announced that it was adding free text messaging to some of its basic plans, being the first major Lifeline company to do so. It has also announced the expansion of its operations to two states where there were no free carriers previously.  With these announcements, Assurance Wireless seems committed to rapid expansion and to bringing their customers value.
