Assurance Wireless has just announced that they will offer free cell phones in the state of Minnesota. This particularly good news for the people of Minnesota as Assurance Wireless is the first of largest free cell phone companies to offer Lifeline Assistance Plan phones in the state which was previously only covered by Life Wireless. Minnesota is the 38th state that Assurance Wireless will operate in. The company has followed up on a strong year of expansion in 2012 with this, its latest announcement. The company cited in their press release that over 19% of the people of Minnesota are living below the poverty line. Assurance Wireless gives the people in Minnesota more options in choosing a carrier that is right for them

To be eligible for service, a Minnesota resident must participate in one of the following government-assistance programs.

  • Medicaid
  • Food Stamps/SNAP
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP)
  • National School Lunch’s FREE Lunch Program (NSL)
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
