Residents of California, get ready! At long last, it appears that Assurance Wireless may finally be coming soon to the state of California. SFgate.com has reported that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is about to give full approval to Assurance Wireless within the next few weeks. When the final approval comes, it will be excellent news for millions of Californians who are looking for ways to stretch their budgets (see the bottom of this page to find out how you can be one of the first people to be notified of the final approval).

It will also mark the end of a long process for the company, as Assurance Wireless has had their application in California pending since 2009, and partially approved since 2011.

It was reported that the only detail left to be worked out was the language Assurance Wireless would use to promote their  service to the public. However, representatives of both the CPUC and Assurance Wireless, a subsidiary of Sprint, were optimistic that there would be “no surprises” and that there should be no problem in fully approving the company in the next few weeks.

The most-populous state in  the nation has only had one Lifeline provider, Reachout Wireless, for quite some time. Now residents in California will have a choice in getting a Lifeline phone. Assurance Wireless is the only of the major free phone providers that also  provides free text messages as part of their basic package.

It appears that residents of California who want a free phone with Assurance Wireless will have to pay a $20 fee to receive their phones, and will initially have to pay 10 cents per talk minute. However, customers will be moved to the Assurance Wireless basic plan, where they get 250 minutes free, and the $20 will be used as a credit that a customer can use to purchase more minutes when they exceed their monthly supply. We will report more details about the plan as we have them.

CellularPhones4free.com will have all of the information California residents will need to get a phone from Assurance Wireless.  We will have a downloadable copy of the application and all of the qualifying information when it is available.
