Assurance Wireless is a company established by Virgin Mobile USA to work with the Lifeline Assistance Program. They are one of the fastest-growing companies that offer free cell phones to low-income Americans.  Virgin Mobile USA was purchased by Sprint, one of the leading full service cell providers. All Assurance Wireless calls are handled on the Sprint network; therefore, their customers have access to one of the best networks in the country and can be assured of the best call quality. In an attempt to become the company that delivers the best service to their customers, Assurance Wireless has recently made some exciting new announcements that address shortcomings in their service. The company believes these changes will continue to improve the quality of their offerings and bring more value to their customers.

Assurance Wireless – Plans and Options

As part of their participation under the Lifeline plan, Assurance Wireless offers a free cell phone along with 250 free minutes to use every month for local and long-distance calling as part of their basic plan. They recently announced that customers on the basic plan will also receive 250 text messages absolutely free, making them the first major Lifeline provider to offer free text messages as part of their basic plan. Call waiting, caller ID and voicemail are included as well. If you need more than the basic plan, Assurance Wireless offers the following low-cost upgrades.

  • For $5 a month, you can have 250 more minutes added to your phone. When added to the 250 free minutes, you have a total of 500 minutes to anytime during the month. Just like the basic plan, you also will receive 250 text messages every month.
  • For $20 a month, Assurance Wireless offers 750 additional minutes (for a total of 1000) and 1000 text messages added to your phone.
  • For $30 a month, Assurance Wireless offers unlimited talk minutes, text messages and even web access! Again, this is a first in the Lifeline program.

With the announcement of the inclusion of text messages in their basic plans, Assurance Wireless has eliminated their previous text message packages. If you need more texts they can be purchased on an as-you-go basis (priced below).

Other services are available on an as-you-go basis.

  • Additional talk minutes can be purchased at 10¢ each
  •  Text messages  are available at 10¢ each
  •  411 service at $1.75 per call + standard airtime charges
  • International calling is available at reasonable rates

If a customer uses all of his plan minutes, any additional minutes will be charged at the rates above, as long as there is a sufficient balance in his or her account.

Data Plans

Mobile Internet and data services are also available for your Assurance Wireless phone. You may purchase what is known as “Basic rate” service which is $1.50 per MB. This data allowance expires 24 hours after purchase. For additional savings, you can purchase a monthly Data Pack subscription. The packages available are:

  • $5 for 5MB
  • $10 for 10MB
  • $20 for 50MB

Unused data will expire at the end of the coverage period and is not rolled over. If you use all of your data allotment before the coverage month has ended, you will be charged at the Basic Rate until you receive the next month’s allotment.

Transfers and Upgrades

Assurance Wireless service cannot be transferred to most phones, with the exception of some other Virgin Mobile phones. If you have another handset, it is unlikely you will be able to use it. Assurance Wireless cannot be used with a Blackberry or an Android-powered phone.

For a limited time, Assurance Wireless is giving some of their customers a choice between 2 phones. If you are a prospective customer in the states of Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, New Hampshire, North Carolina or Tennessee you may choose between the standard Assurance Wireless Jax (made by Kyocera), or for $29.99 excluding taxes and shipping, new customers can choose the Assurance Wireless Loft (also made by Kyocera). The Loft is equipped with a full Qwerty keypad. If you are an existing customer in those states and wish to upgrade your phone, the fee rises to $68.99 excluding taxes and shipping.

This offer is unfortunately only open to new customers of those states and is only available until supplies last.


Adding Money –  Assurance Wireless Top Up

If you choose to buy additional minutes or services for your account, adding credit to your Assurance Wireless phone is very easy. You may add credit to your account by using a Virgin Mobile Top-up card, a credit or debit card or PayPal.

Virgin Mobile Top Up cards are sold at popular retail stores, like 7-11, CVS, Radio Shack, Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Walgreen’s and many others, making it very convenient to find a nearby place to buy them. You can buy cards in the following amounts: $10, $20, $40 & $60. You may top up on the Virgin Mobile website as well.

Another way of topping up your account is by registering under the Auto Top-Up plan. When you register under the Auto Top-Up plan, you agree to have a selected amount deducted from your debit card, credit card or PayPal account and added to your Assurance Wireless phone either (1) once a month on the date of your choosing (2) once every 45 days (3) once every 90 days (4) when your balance falls below $5. The minimum amount for auto top up is $10.
