Life Wireless is a nationwide cell phone provider that offers both low-cost and Lifeline service to their customers. They currently operate in the following states: Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island Texas and Virginia. They may be a relatively new carrier, but they have already distinguished themselves by offering a high-degree of customer service.

Life Wireless Phones

Life Wireless offers very basic phones with their Lifeline service. However, if you’d like to use another handset, Life Wireless gives its customers the freedom to order just their SIM card and put it in any unlocked GSM phone.

We receive many e-mails from customers of other carriers whose phones have stopped working and are looking to get a replacement.  With most carriers, they are out of luck, as the companies usually do not replace any non-working phones. However, Life Wireless does something that most Lifeline providers do not, which is offer a phone exchange policy. Customers will have two years from the date of their activation to return a defective or malfunctioning phone to the company.  If the phone is found to be defective, Life Wireless will replace the phone with either a new or refurbished phone.

Life Wireless Plans

Unlike some of the major carriers, Life Wireless offers different plans from state to state. The plan options for both of their Lifeline and regular service are detailed below.

In Arkansas, Louisiana, Maryland and West Virginia, there is only one plan:

  • Customers receive 68 monthly rollover minutes. Text messages are charged at 1/3 a plan minute each.

In Illinois, there is only one plan as well:

  • Customers receive 100 monthly rollover minutes. Text messages are charged at 1/3 a plan minute each

In Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Rhode Island and Puerto Rico, customers have their choice of 3 plans:

  • 68 monthly rollover minutes where text messages are charged at 1/3 a plan minute each
  • 125 monthly rollover minutes where text messages are charged at ½ a plan minute each
  • 250 monthly minutes with no rollover. Text messages are charged at 1 minute each.

There is also a $29.95 Unlimited Text and Plan, available only to Lifeline Customers

Customers who are not-eligible for Lifeline Service may still purchase the same plans described above (with the exception of the Unlimited Plan). These customers must pay a one-time activation fee of $60, and must pay a $13.50 monthly fee ($11.53 in Illinois). Lifeline customers never have to pay a fee for their phones or their monthly minutes.

The following services are offered at no charge: Voicemail, Call Waiting, Caller ID, Three-Way Calling, and Call-Forwarding.

Life Wireless Long Distance Options

While nationwide long-distance is included in both the Lifeline and the non-Lifeline plans, the company also has international rates the option for international calling. We reviewed many of the countries and while were more expensive than a program like Skype, we found some real bargains. For example, if you are looking for cheap calls to China, the company has a rate of only 1.38 cents a minute! Thailand is another good deal at 1.13 cents a minute.

Adding Money to your Life Wireless phone

You may add money to your phone your Life Wireless phone in 2 ways:

  • You may top up on the Life Wireless website or
  • By visiting any MoneyGram agent near you. MoneyGram agents are found in CVS locations, Wal-Marts, check-cashing locations and many others. You are never too far away from a place to top up your Life Wireless balance.

The company gives several refill options:

  • $5 buys 60 minutes of anytime talk; text messages are 1/3 a minute each.
  • $10 buys 130 minutes of anytime talk; text messages are 1/3 a minute each.
  • $7.95 buys 3 days of unlimited text-and-talk
  • $12.95 buys 1 week of unlimited text and talk
  • $21.49 buys 2 weeks of unlimited text and talk.

The last three plans look quite uneconomical considering that the company does offer a $29.99 month-long unlimited text-and-talk plan.
